Making progress with smart racing

Two weeks ago Matthew raced on our home circuit in Valencia. Although not being his favourite circuit, he showed some real progress. Friday sessions were a disaster ending the day with a problem with the throttle. The team worked throughout the evening to fix it. Not getting proper track time wasn’t a great outset for qualifying. And that showed.

He qualified just out of the top 30 which meant he needed to participate in the last chance race. In this race only the top 2 qualifies for the Sunday race.

While being comfortable in P5 during most of the race, he went into gear with just one lap to go. Coming into the last corner he took P2 making sure he qualified for Sunday. The Sunday race was a difficult one with 56 degrees of track temperature. A bad start in race 1 knocked down his confidence. A red flag gave him a second chance at a good start, though. He came in 24th.

The start in race 2 was better. Unfortunately a penalty for exceeding track limits caused him to loose a few places. The end result: a somewhat disappointing P25, but also significantly better lap times and some really smart driving skills.
